SANACO – The Body and the Voice of Cooperatives

Board and Management

The Board of SANACO is guided by its Constitution, Human
Resource, Financial Policy and Procedure, Strategic & Business Plan & Co operate and Communication Policy, which are reviewed on an annual basis. SANACO has an elected 6 executive committee members and 36 National Board of Directors, composed of four Directors from each province i.e. two elected directly and one provincial chairperson and provincial secretary. Each province elected four Directors who are presented to the AGM for ratification by the delegates. If the Directors who has been placed before the AGM is not ratified, the branch concerned is required to hold another election and present another candidate to the AGM or General Assembly. The Board meets at quarterly basis and our registration number if as
follows: No. 2009/005873/26.

Projects

Workshops on such topics as what is a co operatives, organization and management, conflict resolution, crisis management, strategic planning, and gender issues have been held. So far we had a contract to organize & workshops co operatives on social mobilization, development ®istration of cooperatives & building of two factories i.e. KwaZulu Natal in Nkandla and Eastern Cape in Flagstaff due to a project awarded by Department of Cooperatives Governance (DCoG) to SANACO to organize, train and register co operatives. Training learners on basic electrical engineering on NQF level 1 and training on agricultural cooperatives on farm together project.

ICA SADCCF Launch

As the member of International Co operatives Alliance (ICA) the organization has participated in the Africa Inter Ministerial Technical Conference and the African International Co operatives Alliance Conference. We have launch on the 10 & 11 March 2011 at the Development Bank of Southern African (DBSA) the Southern African Development Countries Cooperative Federation (SADCCF)

National Conference

As the Apex body we have organized a national cooperatives conference on 18-20 April 2011 that was held at Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and the national conference held at Burgers Park Hotel on the 28 February 2014.

Conferences

SANACO has held branch, districts or metro and provincial launch meetings and community or co operative’s workshops in all 9 provinces of the country. The highlights of these meetings are the person-to-person networking which occurs and the practical workshops directed at enhancing the skills of the SANACO members.

Newsletters

SANACO produces a quarterly newsletter called SANACO News Letter that provides news briefs from across the country, informative articles on primary and secondary co operatives issues, and profiles of successful member co operatives. Only one newsletter was published since the launch.

Database collection and development

The organization has started a data base collection and verification of existing and functional co operatives. This is an ongoing work with the result expected to be shared every year with role player in co operative’s development including policy makers

Strategic Partnership

Dorah Tamana Co operatives Centre (DTCC) is a not for profit, nongovernmental organization established to promote, develop and support the co operatives movement in South Africa. It provides technical support and non technical support to SANACO as an associate member. DTI, EW SETA, THETA, SERVICES SETA, DBSA, PRODUCTIVITY SA

Awareness on the cooperatives concept

SANACO provincial structures are involved in raising awareness within communities about the concept of co operatives as well the role of co operatives in economic development of society in particular the marginal.

Membership Survey

SANACO publishes a survey of its members which covers the updates profiles of co operatives in South Africa; the economics, institutional structure and performance of co operatives belonging to SANACO.

The 2010 Member Co operatives Survey (MCS) was the first survey to be conducted by SANACO and were completed in October 2011. The survey was widely distributed and well received by all our members and international organizations, including International Co operatives Alliance (ICA).

International meetings and exchanges

SANACO attended the Global conference and General Assembly that was held in Turkey (Antalya) on the 10-13 November 2015.
